Native to the high elevations and mountain slopes of North America, Arnica has long served as one of nature’s most trusted answers to physical exhaustion and recovery.
For generations, Indigenous peoples across the mountainous West gathered native Arnica species and prepared them in oils, poultices, and salves. Among the Blackfeet, Arnica was traditionally used for inflammation and made into a rub for aching joints and muscles. Other Indigenous communities developed their own preparations, passing knowledge of the bright yellow mountain flower from one generation to the next.
As settlers, homesteaders, and miners moved westward in the 19th century, the American frontier brought a new appreciation for plants that could offer comfort after demanding physical work. Arnica found its way into the growing tradition of American herbalism, where preparations were used topically for bruises, strains, and sore muscles.
