Native to the lush regions of East Asia, Camellia sinensis found an unexpected second home in the rich soil of the American South. The plant’s American journey began in 1799, when French botanist André Michaux introduced it to Middleton Place near Charleston, South Carolina.
Throughout the 1800s, American presidents and ambitious entrepreneurs sought to break British and Chinese monopolies on the global tea trade by establishing domestic Camellia plantations across southern states. While most antebellum tea farms eventually folded due to high labor costs, the resilient Camellia bushes themselves thrived in South Carolina's climate. Decades later, these surviving 19th-century plants became the genetic foundation for the Charleston Tea Garden on Wadmalaw Island, home to North America’s only large-scale commercial tea farm.
The story of Camellia extends beyond the teacup. Camellia’s seeds and leaves yield extraordinary restorative benefits. Naturally rich in polyphenols, Vitamin E, and plant squalene, Camellia extracts deeply nourish and soften dry skin while delivering potent antioxidant protection against everyday environmental stressors.
Today, Camellia continues its legacy in Kuumba Made products, bringing deep hydration, velvety moisture, and timeless plant protection to our favorite skincare formulas.
